Press Release Body = Why Care About your Health?
The May 1st cover story of Time magazine \"What Scares Doctors? Being the Patient\"
was remarkably short on facts to back up the sensationalist title. The facts are
considerably more disturbing. According to a study published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA), there are 250,000 deaths a year caused by
medical practice in the US. The largest number was 106,000 deaths from non-error
negative effects of drugs. 80,000 deaths were from infections acquired in hospitals.
The author was Dr. Barbara Starfield of the prestigious Johns Hopkins School of
Hygiene and Public Health. These numbers indicate that doctors are the third leading
cause of death in the US, after heart disease and cancer.
Rus Slater of realhealth & wellness (www.realhealth.ca) states that the message here
is clear - As healthcare consumers we need to take responsibility for not getting
drawn in to a failing system that may not only fail to meet our needs but could harm
or even kill us. It starts with making healthy choices.

Simple Ways to Stay Healthy
Our affluent lifestyle is killing us! The prime suspect is animal fats. Animal based
foods have been conclusively linked to heart disease and cancer, the 2 leading
causes of death in North America. Habit is not always easy to change, but little
steps can have big ripples over time. Mom was right about eating your veggies. Try
adding more fruits and veggies to your diet. Instead of the massive slab of steak
being the center piece of a meal have a smaller portion of meat added to a savory
mix of veggies. Or try 1 day a week where you don\'t eat meat.

EXERCISE!
You don\'t have to be a marathon runner. 30 minutes, 3-4 days a week will give
significant cardiovascular benefit. You don\'t even have to do the 30 minutes
consecutively. Instead of driving around hunting for that perfect parking spot -
park a block or 2 away and walk! Do that a couple of times a day and you will
benefit. Take the stairs, ride a bike to work, or go for a walk at lunchtime.
Whatever you do make it fun so you\'ll want to keep it up.

Cats linked to Schizophrenia
Recent epidemiologic studies indicate that infectious agents may contribute to some
cases of schizophrenia. In animals, infections with Toxoplasma gondii can alter
behavior and neurotransmitter function. In humans, acute infection with the cat
virus \"T. gondii\" can produce psychotic symptoms similar to those displayed by
persons with schizophrenia. Two other studies found that exposure to cats in
childhood was a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia.
